Description
Provisions Iowa student, faculty, and staff user accounts, plus courses and enrollments, in ICON.
User accounts are created for all faculty, staff and students who are considered "current"; this does not include, e.g., students who are admitted but have not yet registered. Account information, includng University ID, HawkID, first and last name, and UI email alias are taken from an LDAP feed provided by the Directory and Authentication group within ITS Systems and Platforms Administration. The feed includes changes to every piece of data except the University ID, which is immutable.
Course sites in ICON are provisioned in one of two ways. First, instructors can request a course site by following the "Request an ICON course site" link on the ICON home page. Second, most colleges on campus have elected to have a course site created for every course offered each semester. Although this means we will create many empty course sites that will never be used, we like that it lowers the barrier to entry for faculty. Course information is taken from copies of the ITCH and OSIRIS databases, which hold course descriptions and instructor assignments, respectively. The copies reside in the Registrar's data warehouse, which can be up to 24 hours out of date at any given time; unfortunately, it isn't possible for us to use the "live" database, at least for now.
Enrollments are processed automatically for each course site that's been created. Enrollments do come from the "live" database. Along with enrolling, we also drop students from ICON course sites when their actual enrollments are dropped or withdrawn. However, when a student drops, her ICON course data is preserved in a hidden state, so that it can be restored if she happens to re-enroll.
All SIS import data is synchronized during overnight batch processes.
