Description

Allows instructors using WebAssign to enable automatic creation of WebAssign user accounts for students in their ICON courses, and automatic registration of those students in WebAssign courses. Requires a fairly simple, but non-obvious bit of setup on the instructor's part.

Note that this is only operable for instructors who are already WebAssign users (as of this writing, only in the Dept. of Chemistry).

Instructions

Setup requires the instructor to

• tell WebAssign the ICON "course code"
• insert a special link in the ICON course

More specifically:

1. Make a note of your Course Code within ICON, located in the upper navigation bar on the "Edit Course" or "Manage Course" screen. For example, the navigation bar might read:
   : Manage Course Offering: CHEM_004011_SEC00A_20063 - 004:011:00 Fall06 Principles of Chemistry I
   In this case, the course code is CHEM_004011_SEC00A_20063 .
2. Log in to WebAssign and enter your ICON course code in the corresponding WebAssign course.
   1. If you have not yet created your WebAssign course, you will be able to enter your ICON Course Code on the 2nd page of this process, as the optional Section or Period Name.
   2. If your WebAssign course has already been created, click the Edit Class Info link for the appropriate course. In the Section Information area of this page, find the link titled "ICON Course Code". Click this link to open a small window, where you may enter the ICON Course Code and save.
3. Back in ICON, insert a link to your WebAssign course. This can be done anywhere that links are allowed, such as inside a news item, homepage widget, navbar, or content topic link. Where possible, it is best to specify that the link open in a new window. The URL of the link should be:
   https://icon.uiowa.edu/d2l/orgtools/outgoingsso/webassign.asp?ou=\{OrgUnitId}
4. ICON will translate "{OrgUnitId}" into a value appropriate for your course. When a student clicks the link, ICON will determine the current Course Code, verify the student's rights to that course within ICON, then log the student into the associated WebAssign course automatically.
