Faculty Handbook

The information contained on these pages pertains to faculty members teaching in the undergraduate program in the Tippie College of Business. This includes any course with a "06" prefix, and numbered less than 200.

Professional Ethics and Responsibilities

The University Operations Manual outlines expectations for faculty behavior, including expectations for evaluation of student work and availability to students.

Course enrollment

Course scheduling and enrollment are jointly managed by the Undergraduate Program Office and the Departments. In general, courses numbered above 100 (e.g., 6F:117) are restricted to students enrolled in that major (e.g., Finance) during the early registration period. After early registration ends, those courses are restricted to students enrolled in the Tippie College of Business. The student's college of enrollment and major are listed on OSIRIS.

The University sets deadlines by which students can add and drop classes. For normal semester-length courses, students are allowed to drop until the end of the 10th week of class and to add until the 10th day of class. Students can add and drop non-restricted classes until the beginning of the session using ISIS. Adds and drops on or after the first day of class require an instructor's signature. Students who are enrolled in the Tippie College do not need an advisor's signature prior to the deadlines. Students who are pre-business students (not yet enrolled in the Tippie College) must obtain an advisor's signature. Students who wish to add or drop after the deadline need see an adviser in the Undergraduate Program Office.

Departments may also administratively drop a student from a class.

Required Syllabus

Specific requirements for a course syllabus include policies mandated by the University and by the College. We request that faculty send a copy of their syllabi to their department administrators so that the syllabus can be available electronically. Note that the syllabus site is password protected: only people with hawkids are permitted access.

Exams and Attendance Policies
  • Attendance policies and missed exams

The University requires that students be given the opportunity to complete missed work under certain circumstances. The Tippie Faculty have adopted particular guidelines .
The registrar maintains a site that explains the University policy on missed examinations.

  • Exams scheduled outside of class

Students should be informed on the first day of class of the dates of any exams to be held outside of normal class times. Regularly-scheduled classes take precedence over exams scheduled outside of regular class hours; students who have a course conflict must be given the option of a makeup exam. You must allow a student to make up the exam if he or she has another class that regularly meets during your exam time. There are no exceptions to this policy. For example, if your class meets at 1:05 on Tuesdays but your exams are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursdays, you must allow a student who has a regularly scheduled Thursday evening class to take a make up exam. This would also be true for students with other excused absences. You must provide the same type of exam - no harder or easier and essentially the same format and you may not require the student to take a make up during a time when he or she has another regularly-scheduled class, nor may you impose unreasonable burdens on a student taking a makeup.

  • Final Exams

Final examinations must be scheduled during the time assigned by the registrar unless a change is approved in advance, in writing, by Dean Hunter. Only final exams may be given during finals week. No exams may be given during the final week of the semester; if a quiz is the final test to be given, that quiz counts as the final exam in a course.
No student is required to take more than three examinations in one day. An undergraduate student who has (a) two examinations scheduled for the same period or (b) more than three examinations scheduled for the same day, may file a request for a change of schedule at the Registrar Service Center, 17 Calvin Hall. Please see the academic deadlines calendar for the last day to file for final exam conflicts. Names of students for whom changes have been approved and copies of their final examination schedules will be forwarded to instructors. By analyzing these schedules, instructors can plan alternate periods so that they fall at times that are free on the students' schedules. Instructors are to announce alternate arrangements to all students involved.

Honor Code

Students enrolled in courses in the Tippie College of Business are governed by an honor code. Incidents of academic misconduct must be reported to the Senior Associate Dean, Charles Whiteman. Instructors are required to include an honor code statement on each exam.

Student Academic Records

Student academic records are confidential under the Federal Education Records Privacy Act (FERPA) , and can only be shared with others under particular circumstances. To access student records, a faculty member must complete FERPA training . The University maintains student-signed releases for confidential information.

Student course materials are governed by the Tippie Student Records Policy.
