Keneda Playwrighting Competition
The Alliance Theatre invites you to participate in a competition for graduate students in their final year of study of playwriting. The student-written play chosen through this competition will receive its world premiere production on the Tony® recipient Alliance Theatre’s Hertz Stage in the 2010-2011 season. Decisions will be made and writers notified by March 15, 2010.
We will be mailing the scripts out on September 25th. There is a wire basket in the main office, behind Hillary.
Guidelines
- The play must have no prior professional productions and must be available for its world premiere in the 2009-2010 season. Previous university productions, workshops and public readings at professional theaters are all acceptable.
- If the work is selected for a professional world premiere at another theater before notification of the results of the competition, please contact the Alliance to submit an alternate script.
- The playwright must graduate from his/her graduate program between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2010. No submissions from undergraduate writers, graduate writers who have not yet reached the final year of their programs, or writers who graduated before September 1, 2009 will be accepted. All members of a musical writing team must be eligible for the competition. If you have submitted to Kendeda in the past but are working on a subsequent degree/certificate at a different school, you are once again eligible. Previous winners, however, are ineligible.
- Works for elementary- and middle-school audiences are welcome in this competition for the Alliance Theatre’s season for young audiences. Works for teen audiences will not be considered.
- If the work submitted is an adaptation of another work not in the public domain, the writer must providewritten proof of permission to adapt it.
- Each writer or musical theatre writing team may send only one work to the Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition.
- There are no restrictions on subject matter, format, cast size, or style. We are interested in reading what you consider to be your best work. Information about the Alliance Theatre’s mission and recent production history is attached. We recommend you consider it as you select your submission.
- If selected as a winner or finalist, the Alliance asks that you make yourself available for all Kendeda activities throughout 10/11.
THE POSTMARK DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS OCTOBER 1, 2009.
