The purpose of this course is to examine the provision of community recreation opportunities in the U.S. by public and nonprofit organizations. Several analytical perspectives are utilized. Social, political, and economic principles are used to examine leisure opportunities at a societal level. Organizational and management theory is used to develop an understanding of the efficient and effective provision of recreation services by nonprofit and public agencies. Students examine how public and nonprofit recreation agencies function and develop knowledge and skills required for fulfilling a managerial role in a recreation agency. Students are encouraged to integrate theories of recreation participation with management strategies to gain and understanding of organizational best practices.
