Wiki Cloud Migration Deadline

IMPORTANT!

On January 8th, 2024 the University of Iowa Wiki hosted at https://wiki.uiowa.edu will be shut down permanently. If you would like to continue using Confluence (Wiki) in the Cloud, you will need to request licenses by filling out this Workflow form if you haven't done so already.

For more information and other options for your content, please visit the Wiki Service Change Options and FAQs page. Your content from https://wiki.uiowa.edu will be available for migration upon request for two years (until 1/8/2026).

Upgrade Complete!

The wiki upgrade was completed on May 29th at 7:30 am.  The upgrade brings a host of new features!  Find out what's new!

Update

The wiki will be upgraded on Tuesday, May 28th, starting at 7 am.  During the day, the wiki will be read-only (no changes will be saved).  At 8 am on Wednesday, May 29th, the wiki will be upgraded and available for use!

Summary

The upgrade from our current version to version 4.2 was unsuccessful due to incompatibilities with our HawkID system.  We were unable to develop a workaround with the vendor, and were informed that version 5 of the wiki would resolved this issue.  Version 5 was recently released and we are starting the process of getting a test version installed.  Provided the testing proves successful, we are hoping to upgrade to version 5 during summer 2013.

What's Changing?

Version 5 brings a host of new changes, as well as the previous version that we are skipping over (3.5, 4.x).  While the main interaction will be similar, there are a substantial amount of improvements and changes to make editing, navigation, and collaboration easier and more streamlined.  Check out this video released from the vendor (Atlassian) to learn more:

Timeline

Provided testing goes well, we hope to upgrade the wiki during the summer of 2013.

    1. Hi Mikhail,

      I agree that the lack of nested groups is a major downfall currently.  Unfortunately, version 3.5+ introduces a new user management system that, while allowing nested groups, also incorporates some huge issues for organizations that rely heavily on AD (such as taking approx. 1-2 minutes to load a page).  We are working with the vendor to get these issues resolved and move forward, but for the immediate future we will be on the current version.

      1. Would you be interested if somebody did work along http://forums.atlassian.com/thread.jspa?threadID=21305 to implement AD specific support for 3.4.2?

        I have my doubts about Atlassian willingness to fix this issue.

        1. At the end I used Powershell script to manually expand groups

          function Get-ADNestedGroupMembers
          	{
            	[cmdletbinding()]
            	param ( [String] $group )
            	Import-Module ActiveDirectory
            	$Members = Get-ADGroupMember -Identity $group -Recursive
            	$members
            	}

          function Expand-ADGroupMembers
          	{
            	[cmdletbinding()]
            	param ( [String] $group )
          	Write-Host "Expanding group $group"
          	$newGroupUsers = Get-ADNestedGroupMembers $group
          	$currentGroupUsers = Get-ADGroupMember -Identity $group  | Where-Object { $_.objectClass -eq 'user' }

          	if ( $currentGroupUsers ) {
          		Remove-ADGroupMember -Identity $group -Members $currentGroupUsers -Confirm:$false
          		}

          	if ( $newGroupUsers -ne $null ) {
          		Add-ADGroupMember -Identity $group -Members $newGroupUsers -Confirm:$false
          		}
          	}

          Expand-ADGroupMembers -Group 'ACL_BS-Services-Wiki_Readers'
          Expand-ADGroupMembers -Group 'ACL_BS-Services-Wiki_Admins'
          Expand-ADGroupMembers -Group 'ACL_BS-Services-Wiki-OtherAreas_Admins'
          Expand-ADGroupMembers -Group 'ACL_BS-Services-Wiki-RiskManagement_Readers'
          Expand-ADGroupMembers -Group 'ACL_BS-Services-Wiki-RiskManagement_Admins'
          Expand-ADGroupMembers -Group 'ACL_BS-Services-Wiki-PrintingWebOrders_Readers'

      2. Do we have support for nested groups enabled? Doesn't seem to be working for me even on 5.1.

        1. Mikhail,

          Unfortunately, nested groups are not enabled.  When enabled, the login takes around 30 seconds due to the large size of our AD structure.  The vendor is aware of this, but I don't think it will be remedied in the near future.

  1. Jonathan,

    I see this page is from July. Are you still looking to upgrade the wiki to a current version?

    Chris Sutton

    1. Hi Chris,

      We are still looking at upgrading. We have ironed out most of the issues in our test environment, but AD authentication is still holding us back. Due to the design of the software, logins take approximately 2.5 minutes. I've been in communication with the vendor and we are making progress, but it is moving slowly. Once we are able to authenticate effectively, we are planning on upgrading.

      1. Without committing to anything, would the upgrade likely happen by this summer?

        1. Hi Chris,

          The vendor has told us that the log in issue will be resolved in version 5 of the software, which will be available around March or April. Provided the claims are correct, our goal is to upgrade during the summer if all goes well.

  2. Hi Jon,

    I am working with a faculty member in the math department. She is open to using the wiki if it supports displaying math symbols (think higher level than algebra).

    Does the wiki support math symbols? She currently uses mathjax

    Thanks - Karen

    PS - I did a search in the notation guide and see that MathJax is supported, I want to confirm that this is true...

    1. Hi Karen,

      We've just recently installed MathJax on the wiki. These macros can be found in the macro browser by searching for Math.

      For example:

          {mathinline}\frac{x}{y}{mathinline} a nice fraction.
          And to get a nice integral, simply use {mathdisplay}\int_{-\infty}^\infty \mbox{e}^{-x^2} \mbox{d}x.{mathdisplay}
          Or using some AMS math features:

          {mathdisplay}
            \begin{bmatrix} \dot x\\ \dot y\end{bmatrix} =
              \begin{bmatrix}a_{1,1} & a_{1,2}\\ a_{2,1} & a_{2,2}\end{bmatrix}
              \begin{bmatrix}x\\ y\end{bmatrix}
          {mathdisplay}

      returns:

      a nice fraction.
      And to get a nice integral, simply use
      Or using some AMS math features:

  3. Hi Jonathan,

    I share a wikisite with several faculty members from different departments, and they are using different machines provided by those departments to access the site. One of the professors is running Microsoft Windows with Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), which seems to be partially incompatible with the current version of Confluence. Do you know if the upgrade this summer will fix this issue?

    Thanks for your help,

    Sebastian

    1. Hi Sebastian,

      Yes, the upgraded version of the wiki will support IE 8,9, and 10. I have had good luck with IE 10 on our current version, so you could try updating Internet Explorer at the moment.
