General Auditions will be held Thursday, August 29th and Friday, August 30th from 7:00p-11:00p.

Callbacks will be held Saturday, August 31st from 10:00a-11:00p

Sunday, September 1st from 10:00a-8:00p

Casting will be announced starting at 10:00p, Sunday, September 1st. Several shows will start rehearsal on September 3rd. 


General Auditions are held in the Alan MacVey Theatre (Formerly Theatre B) located in the Theatre Building along North Riverside Drive. There will be a registration table in the Back Hallway of the Theater Building. 

Starting at 9:30a, on Monday, August 30th you may sign up here for an audition slot.  We do accept 10 walk-ins each evening, but you will need to wait if you do not have an audition slot.


GENERAL AUDITIONS: A 3-minute time period is allotted for each general audition.  Please prepare 1-2 monologues. Total audition time must not exceed 3 minutes. You will be timed and asked to stop if this time limit is exceeded.  We are hoping these procedures will helps keep appointments on schedule for everyone.

Suggestions for the Best Auditions 

There will be an Audition Workshop on Tuesday, August 27th in the Alan MacVey Theatre at 7:30p.  All are welcome to attend. 

The audition may be viewed by Acting faculty, directors of the MainStage, Gallery, Workshop, and Reading sessions, and members of the directing classes and the Playwrights Workshop. Many projects, large and small, will be cast throughout the year.  Also, audition sessions will be held in November for the Spring Semester, December for the Ten Minute Play Festival, and in March 2018 for the Iowa New Play Festival.


1. All auditions are scheduled by signing up for a time in advance. Please sign up as soon as possible, after 9:30 am on Monday, August 26th. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your audition -- if you do not arrive 30 minutes prior to your timeslot, you will forfeit your reservation.  If there are cancellations, you may audition earlier than scheduled.

2. Please visit to create your audition profile. Upload a photo of yourself (no larger than 5 Mb). You will also be asked to list your most recent theatre experience. If you wish, you may upload a pdf of your own resume instead of completing the online form.

4. Read the audition recommendations. Your total audition length should not exceed the 3-minute limit. Your preparation should include timing your audition material to make sure it is the proper length.  

5. Callback notices for productions will be posted by 9:00a on Saturday, August 30th.  You may be called back for more than one production.  Callbacks run five days and a show may call you to more than one session.

6. Current students who have an approved absence or are not in residence at the time of audition, including those who are studying abroad or serving in the military, and who want to be considered for casting may audition by video submission.  All videos must be unedited and submitted by means of internet search engine or DVD.  All submissions must be complete by the first day of the scheduled auditions so that all directors may review the work in a timely fashion.  To request this accommodation, please contact the Production Stage Manager (


  • Auditions for University Theatre productions are open to everyone. For academic considerations, priority is given to theatre majors first, and then all other students of the University of Iowa. Members of the greater Iowa City community are also strongly encouraged to audition. There are many excellent roles available throughout the year and many non-majors and actors from the surrounding community are cast each season. Occasionally, professional guest actors will also be employed.
  • In all disciplines and areas of theatrical production, the Theatre Arts Department seeks to include persons of every race, color, culture, age, gender, creed, physical disability and sexual orientation. The Department is committed to Non-Traditional Casting to expand opportunities for women, actors of color, and actors with disabilities in roles where race, gender, or the presence or absence of a disability is not germane.
  • At the same time, the Theatre Arts Department is sensitive to perceptions of stereotyping and of questionable interpretations that can arise regarding non-traditional casting.  For example:  Is casting a minority actor as a servant appropriate?  What are the alternatives?  What is the response of the actor involved?  Should a white actor be considered for a role written for a minority actor?  Should a woman play a role written for a man, and, if so, should she play it as a male or female?  Do such decisions alter or damage the message or intention of the script?  Faculty and students are strongly encouraged to express their concerns about the social ramifications of casting decisions as early as possible in the process;  such occasions may be used to positively expand the educational discourse rather than exclude opinion and thought.
  • Directors may not consider actors for casting unless the actors first participate in general auditions held prior to callbacks.  However, when a script explicitly requires an actor of specific race, age, or physical presence not represented within the auditioning pool, or presents other unusual circumstances related to casting, the director may expand the search outside the limits of those who attended general auditions.
