What Ary You? Race, Ethnicity and Genetic Testing

A brief (but not all-encompassing!) guide to understanding racial and ethnic identity in the context of DNA test results and within society. What does it really mean to be “60% Irish” or “75% West African”? How does this connect to the oral history of your ancestry?

Why the Y? (and not the mtDNA)

Uni-parentally inherited chromosomes (the Y and mitochondrial DNA) represent single lines of ancestry. The clarity and deepness of these lineages provide us with different information than the rest of the genome, with the Y receiving more attention lately. This presentation will focus on aspects that make the Y chromosome special and so useful for understanding human ancestry.

6:00-7:00pm, Room ADigital Media Room (2nd Floor), Iowa City Public Library
