It's Coming!

Version 5.1 of the wiki is going to be arriving at the end of May. The upgrade brings a number of great features that will make your content creation quicker, easier, and more elegant.

The editor will undergo a significant improvement. Rich Text and Wiki Markup have been merged into a single editor that gives a more realistic view of your changes. Learn more about the changes to the editor (made in version 4) by watching this video:

Stay tuned for more info!

New Macro 'MathJax'
A new macro has arrived to make equations beautiful and web friendly: MathJax. The MathJax macros enable you to utilize MathJax equations within your wiki site in one of two ways: inline and centered. Some of the benefits include better accessibility, zoom, and display of math equations.

Examples

This shows a demonstration of how an equation, such as

can be within a line of text. Alternatively, we can highlight an equation by centering it on a page:

Meanwhile the text continues on the next line.

The Code:

Zoom

You can also magnify an equations by setting the zoom trigger and factor. Right click the equation and navigate the menus as seen here:

The wiki just got better for outlines and documentation.  We've added a new macro titled "Numbered Headings".  This macro allows you to customize the headings within your page.  For example, using the standard Heading 1, Heading 2, etc., we can display something like:

Here's the code:

{numberedheadings}
h1. Heading 1
h2. Heading 2
h2. Second Heading 2
h3. Heading 3
h2. Third Heading 2
h1. Second Heading 1
{numberedheadings}

If you want to get custom, you can develop your own style, such as:

Here's the code:

{numberedheadings:number-format=custom|h1=[h1.upper-roman].|h2=[h1.upper-roman].[h2.upper-latin].|h3=[h1.upper-roman].[h2.upper-latin].[h3.lower-roman].}
h1. Heading 1
h2. Heading 2
h2. Second Heading 2
h3. Heading 3
h2. Third Heading 2
h1. Second Heading 1
{numberedheadings}
New Macro - expand

A new macro is in town: expand. The expand macro enables text to be hidden and expanded upon clicking some text. Here's an example:

This text was hidden!

How does that happen?

Here's the code:

{expand:title=Click me!}
This text was hidden!
{expand}

Wiki using https

On Wednesday, February 27th, the wiki started utilizing https:// for all traffic. This provides encryption on all wiki pages so that content is more secure.  Due to this change, you may experience an issue due to browser caching or active logins.  If you are experiencing issues, try the following solutions:

  • Log out
  • Clear your browser's cache
  • Close and open your browser
  • Login again

If you have tried these steps and are still experiencing issues, please contact the ITS Helpdesk

Getting Help

Having issues with editing or finding your wiki page?  Check out the wiki help section!  The help section is available through the 'Get Help!' link in the upper right hand corner of every page.  There are some useful step-by-step tutorials for a lot of the basic tasks and some FAQ's.

If you're still stuck, the Help section gives you a link to the ITS Helpdesk.  Feel free to contact them via email, chat, or phone.

Space Cloning!

Wish you could copy an existing wiki space to a new wiki space? Now you can! For instructors who would like to use the same wiki space structure from semester to semester, you are now able to clone an existing wiki to a new wiki.

Similar to requesting a new wiki, you should fill out this application form. We will need the following:

  • Current space url
  • Title of the new space

Also, you have the option of copying (or not copying) the existing attachments and/or comments.

If you have any questions, please contact the ITS Helpdesk.

The ITS wiki is made up of hundreds of wiki spaces. You can think of a wiki space as a small wiki separate from all other wikis within the larger system.  Really, the ITS wiki is not a wiki at all, but a collection of many wikis!

Just as the broader system has an administrator that controls the settings and styles, each wiki space has a space administrator who controls the settings, style, and permissions for that particular wiki.

  As a result, you can end up with one wiki space completely open to the public and another wiki space that is locked-down with strict permissions.

If you've requested a wiki space, or are an instructor for a course, you are a space administrator.  Look at the helpful tutorials for Space Administrators (scroll to the bottom) to get started!

Moving Pages

Have you ever needed to reorganize pages within a space? Restructuring a wiki space is a quick and easy process that can be accomplished in under a minute.

  • Within a space, select 'Pages' from the Browse menu (top menu bar).
  • In the Pages view, make sure to select 'Tree'

  • Select the page you want to move, by dragging and dropping the page to its new location
  • You can move a page above or below another page (marked by a line), or

  • You can place a page into another, making it a child of that page (marked by gray highlighting)

Make sure to try it out and let us know what you think!

The wiki has a variety of permissions that can be given to individuals or groups. Did you know that you can see your permissions? To discover the spaces that you have administrative access to, visit the What are my Permissions page.

Please note that you will need to be logged in with a HawkID for this feature to work. Let us know what you think!

Planned Wiki Outage

On Thursday, September 6th the Wiki service will be down from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM. This downtime is necessary to move the wiki service to a new server in the ITF Datacenter, helping to provide a more robust and reliable wiki environment. During the outage, users will be unable to access the wiki. If you have any questions, please contact the ITS Helpdesk.

You can see a listing of all outage notices, as well as subscribe to future notifications, on the Help Desk Alerts page.

ICON Integration

Did you know that you can link your wiki site to an ICON course?  The ICON Dashboard allows you to either a.) create a wiki space, or b.) connect to an existing wiki space to your ICON course.  Along with providing an easy way of jumping to your wiki space, it also offers several other benefits:

  • Automatic login - If you are logged into ICON, you won't have to login to the wiki
  • Automatic space permissions - If you connect an ICON course and a wiki space, your instructors and students will automatically have the appropriate permissions within the wiki space.

Setting up the connection only takes 1-2 minutes.  Find out how in the ICON - Wiki Integration tutorial.

Wiki Outage

On Thursday, August 8th the UI Wiki service (wiki.uiowa.edu) will be down from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM.  This downtime is necessary to move the wiki service to a new server in the ITF Datacenter, helping to provide a more robust and reliable wiki environment.  During the outage, users will be unable to access the wiki.  If you have any questions, please contact the ITS Helpdesk.

New to the wiki?  Need a refresher?  On Thursday, August 16th, ITS - Instructional Services will be providing a training session on wiki basics. The training session will be held in the ITS Training Room (2523 UCC) from 9 am - 11 am.  Learn firsthand how to navigate the wiki, edit pages, add comments, and add style to your wiki.  Registration is required.
